    The Perfect Dunnellon Afternoon

Twenty minutes west of Ocala lies one of Florida's most beautiful places. Rainbow Springs, the Blue Run of Dunnellon, and a small town that time treated kindly.

    Rainbow Springs State Park

Rainbow Springs State Park is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in Florida. The headspring produces an almost impossibly blue-green water at a constant 68°F year-round — swimming here on a hot summer afternoon is transcendent.

Swim in the spring pool, wander the botanical gardens (one of Florida's hidden horticultural gems), or rent a tube and float the Rainbow River downstream toward Blue Run Park. The current does the work; you just take it all in.

    • Park opens at 8am — arrive early on weekends
    • Tube rentals available at the park's concession area
    • Botanical gardens admission is included with park entry
    • Water temperature holds steady at 68°F year-round

Blue Run Park & the Rainbow River

If you float the Rainbow River, you'll exit at Blue Run Park in downtown Dunnellon. The shuttle runs back to Rainbow Springs on weekends. The river itself is four miles of crystal-clear, slow-moving wonder — lined with cypress, inhabited by manatees in winter, and breathtakingly beautiful throughout.

Even without tubing, Blue Run Park is worth a visit for kayaking or simply sitting on the bank and watching the water move. Few places in Florida deliver this level of natural beauty with this little effort.

    Downtown Dunnellon

After your time on the water, dry off and walk downtown Dunnellon. The small historic district has a handful of good lunch spots, antique shops, and an unhurried atmosphere that makes it easy to linger.

It's the kind of Florida town that hasn't been discovered yet — and that's exactly what makes it worth the drive. Grab a meal, browse a shop or two, and head home through the rolling horse country of Marion County feeling genuinely refreshed.

💡 Pro Tip: The drive between Ocala and Dunnellon on CR 484 passes some of Marion County's most scenic horse farms. Take the scenic route back.
